When we embrace the ancient ways
of being in right relationship with the earth…
I tucked into a neighbors for a cuppa the other day. In our conversation she asked if the heat dome currently covering much of the US was affecting where I live. So many folks still confuse Washington DC with Washington State. I told her it wasn’t and commented on the impact of climate change. “Sure, it’s all them satellites causing it,” she said. I expect it was the surprised look on my face that caused her to continue. “The climate is changing because of all them things they are putting up in the sky.” In that moment, the only response that came to me was to agree it is humans that are causing the current climate disaster. And left it at that.
No matter the spin. No matter the false narratives we see and swallow, it is humans that are causing these changes. There was a time when we knew how to be in right relationship with the earth.
I miss that mythology.

The heatwave here is about to begin. Heat and no rain. Not the way mid-June is supposed to go in these parts (eastern Pennsylvania). Is it climate change? Yes. It is our fault? Yes. Two of my friends here are escaping to Washington and Seattle. I’ll try to tag along in spirit. You’re so right about mythology. We have pushed out the appropriate gods of all the seasons.

It is interesting in reading Bible accounts of past climate disasters, from a world wide flood to a 3 year drought over Israel which was punishment for Israel turning towards “the gods”, the fertility gods and goddesses and away from the one true God. It’s also in to read about the climatic catastrophes to come before the end of this age.
We also see evidence of much more extreme climate events in the past from mini ice ages where major rivers froze over in the UK and Ireland to mini warm periods where peaches we grown much more successfully in the UK .
What is right relationship with the Earth? Idealising our Pagan past which went so far as human sacrifice to appease various fertility and weather deities, when was this period where we had a right relationship with the earth?
Or is the problem to do with a right relationship with God, a relationship broken by Sin, where most prefer to deny Gods existence to rid us of any guilt.
We will undoubtedly see the climate change narrative escalate very soon and see the increased requirements to surrender sovereignty to the unquestionably trust worthy United Nations who will claim the solutions.
Environmental destruction is undeniable but it’s only a symptom of a much deeper problem, just like War, Poverty, greed, all the other symptoms that trace their roots to our very core, our rebellious hearts that want to reject Gods way for our own way. Our own way ends in destruction.
